Understanding OCD

OCD in adults.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is more than liking things neat. It’s a cycle: unwanted, distressing thoughts or urges (obsessions) followed by actions or mental rituals (compulsions) that bring brief relief — and then the cycle starts again. It can quietly consume hours every day.

Many people with OCD feel ashamed of their thoughts and keep them secret. Intrusive thoughts are a symptom, not a reflection of who you are. OCD responds well to the right treatment, and you don’t have to explain everything perfectly to get started.

Common signs

  • Unwanted, intrusive thoughts or images
  • Excessive checking, cleaning, or counting
  • Needing things to feel “just right”
  • Seeking reassurance again and again
  • Mental rituals like reviewing or praying to undo thoughts
  • Avoiding situations that trigger fears
  • Rituals that take an hour or more a day
  • Knowing the fear doesn’t make sense, yet feeling stuck

Only a qualified clinician can diagnose a mental health condition. If several of these sound familiar, an evaluation is a good next step.

How telehealth works
Frequently Asked

Common questions.

Does having intrusive thoughts mean I want to act on them?

No. In OCD, intrusive thoughts are distressing precisely because they go against what you value. They are a common, treatable symptom.

How long does OCD medication take to work?

Medications for OCD often take several weeks to show an effect, and the full benefit can take longer. We follow up regularly so you’re never waiting without support.

Is OCD the same as being a perfectionist?

Not exactly. Perfectionism can be part of it, but OCD involves an obsession–compulsion cycle that causes significant distress or takes up a lot of time.

Can OCD be treated by telehealth?

Yes. Evaluation and ongoing care are available by telehealth anywhere in Washington, and many ERP-informed exercises translate well to working from home.
